National Great American Pot Pie Day – September 23, 2022, history significance why we celebrate
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an American pot pie will do wonders to both your belly and your soul, and we are glad we have National Great American Pot Pie Day on September 23 to celebrate that. These tasty pastries have been around for as far back as the Neolithic period, and have been keeping us fed and satisfied ever since. It’s no shocker that Marie Callender’s, a pot pie and frozen food company, created a day dedicated solely to this wonderful savory dish.
History of National Great American Pot Pie Day
Similar to meat pies that originated from Great Britain, the American pot pie is something of its own. The first recipe that was printed for pot pies in the United states hails back to 1785. While the pie can be made from turkey or beef, the most common type that is typically made in the US is chicken pot pie.
Pot pies not only contain meat and sauce, but another important ingredient is the vegetables. Traditionally this includes veggies like carrots, peas and corn, as well as grilled onions and celery to add flavor.
By the mid-1950s, frozen pot pies had become all the rage as a convenience food in the United States. The first one was created by the CA Swanson company and was made with chicken.
Marie Callender’s, a company that has been in the business of making pies since 1948, is the founder of National Great American Pie Day. The inaugural day was in 2002 and it has been celebrated each year ever since.

How to Celebrate National Great American Pot Pie Day
National Great American Pot Pie Day is a delightfully tasty time to celebrate! Check out some of these ideas for getting started with celebrating.
Enjoy Eating a Pot Pie
Some American style restaurants and diners still offer delicious pot pies on their menus, so it might be a fun idea to go out for a good old pot pie in celebration of National Great American Pot Pie Day! Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Boston Market, Cracker Barrel and Marie Callender’s are just a few of the restaurants that offer this classic as part of their regular fare.
Try Making Pot Pie at Home
Though it might feel intimidating to make a pot pie from scratch, a few little hacks help to make it much easier. Instead of using homemade pie crust, feel free to pick up a pie crust from the refrigerated section at the grocery store. Or, even easier, try using some puff pastry for a super light and flaky top crust (in this case, forgo the bottom crust).
For the sauce, some people like to use a can of cream of chicken or cream of mushroom soup. Add frozen vegetables and the meat from a rotisserie chicken. Voila! A chicken pot pie can be made in only 30 minutes.
Share a Pot Pie
Even for those who don’t feel like cooking or baking is their strong suit, National Great American Pot Pie Day is a great time to celebrate with friends and family. Even if it’s something as simple as taking a few frozen chicken pot pies to work to share with some coworkers, or ordering a large pot pie from a restaurant to have delivered for the family to share at home.
